On Wednesday the 23rd October I had my first ever placement with active Stirling. This was at the peak in Stirling and I met with my mentor and class mates at 8.45 to get started. Once I had arrived we all spoke for a while before being introduced to the staff we would be working alongside. The staff were all from Active Stirling and other sporting organisations.
I was in the blue group and was linked in with Craig who is also my mentor, in our group we only had 4 children to start off with and then the numbers eventually picked up as the time went on. There was many different activities through out the day such as Boccia, badminton, football, swimming, curling, climbing and athletics.
A few of the children in my group needed a lot of support and others were independent or just needed a little help/supervision. One boy in particular was a young boy called Anoosh, he was 9 years old from Stirling. He wasn’t very familiar with a lot of the sports that we done which was outwith his comfort zone however with 1-1 support and encouragement he gave them all a try and tried his best.
I really enjoyed being able to watch all the different activities and learn about new sports and how to adapt them to suit individuals needs, it was a very interesting day. I feel as though going into the event I was very tense and unsure on what to do or how to act, however as the day went on I could feel myself getting to know all of the children and the teenagers from Denny high school who helped out which made me more comfortable. Craig was also very supportive and answered any questions that I had and also guided me and told me what I could and couldn’t do throughout the day and tried to get me to lead as much as possible to increase my skills.
Looking back now I feel as though one thing I could have changed was my thinking when going into the placement as I feel I overthinked it too much going into it which made me feel very anxious and nervous and when it came to the day of the event I was very confident and the things I worried about didn’t bother me at all as everyone was in the same situation.
Hooray! You have finally gotten started on your placement! I am really pleased for you and it looks like you had a fantastic first day with lots to do. Glad it went well for you and I think you are not alone in the overthinking department. I do the same. Good that you recognised this though. I look forward to you next post!
