Scotand played England in 1966, in the European Championships at Wembley. Next year, on June 18, that battle will recommence due to Scotland winning their group after defeating Serbia.

For a national steeped in footballing history Scotland has lacked representation at big tournaments over the last few decades, failing to make an impact in the last 25 years.

Times have changed though. Steve Clarke has galvanized a squad with purpose who play with a fervor that the Scottish game is all about. Their newfound passion has recreated the feelings the nation had in World Cups gone by.

Scotland qualified for the Euros 2021 with a close-knit penalty shootout win

Clarke has reinstated that belief having got the best out of his team over the course of the qualifiers and the playoffs where Scotland made the final by defeating Israel on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

They traveled to Serbia in the final who were adamant they would stop the Scottish crusade. Scotland played well though and went up 1-0 shortly after the half with a fine goal from Ryan Christie who, after some muddle just outside the 18-yard box, twisted his shot hard and low into the left-hand corner.

Scotland held on and David Marshall in nets was outstanding. After an 89th minute corner though Jovic managed to head the ball into the Scottish net to send the game into extra time.

The additional minutes proved lackluster and the game then went to penalties. Scotland scored each time until Serbia came to hit their last.

Marshall was called upon once more, and he sent the Scottish squad into states of joy as he saved the last penalty securing Scotland representation in the Euros of 2021.

The emotion displayed after the game was a sight to behold and, for a nation that was sleeping for 25 years, they have well and truly woken up now.
