Sturgeon announced £1.32 million additional funding to support students’ mental health
The Scottish government is committing an additional £1.32 million to deliver more mental health support to students.
This is following the previous investment of £3.645 million in September and will permit to cover a wider range of issues students may face such as access to food deliveries or online counselling.
The extra financial support comes after protests from students during the past few weeks. The NHS24 Mental Health Hub will now be available 24/7.
For Udaya Made Abiyoga, 20, a foreign student at the University of Stirling, this is not an issue about money. “I don’t feel there is a need for millions in order to help me getting less stressed,” he said. “Of course, getting more counsellors or food delivery services is a good thing, but what I’m expecting is initiative from the universities instead.”
According to survey from the NSS, in 2020 78% of students in Scotland said they get sufficient advice in relation to their course and 72% said they were given good advice when they needed to make study choices on their course.
“As a fourth year I’m expected to start thinking about my dissertation but I have almost no information about it,” Abiyoga continued. “Lecturers are great, and I have no issue with online classes, I just feel like the whole university is scared to take initiative, like if they were constantly expecting new restrictions.
“
“I don’t want someone to tell me everything is going to be okay, I want information about what’s going on next semester.”
According to survey from the NSS, in 2020 78% of students in Scotland said they get sufficient advice in relation to their course and 72% said they were given good advice when they needed to make study choices on their course.
Despite this overall satisfaction, in October 2020, 32% students said they didn’t feel part of a community of staff and students.
The Scottish government has announced £15 million of funding to improve mental health and respond to issues that may face children and young people and made it clear that students have access to all services that are currently available.
