Edinburgh local Peter Sawkins, 20, won this year’s Great British Bake-Off, becoming not only the youngest ever winner but also the first Scottish contestant to do so.

His hometown featured in many of his baking challenges, including a show-stopper in the first week resembling a bust of Sir Chris Hoy, another Edinburgh star. His Burns’ Supper inspired biscuit bake also delighted Scots across the country, alongside his Edinburgh skyline that featured the Scott Monument, Forth Road Bridge, and Balamoral Hotel. Peter also added traditional Scottish ingredients to his creations, including berries, whisky, oats, and honey.

Sawkins became the youngest ever GBBO winner and the first from Scotland

Due to COVID-19 restrictions all of the contestants this year had to isolate together in a hotel for two weeks, take three COVID tests, and stay within the Bake-Off bubble with other competitors, judges, and producers for six weeks until filming finished.

“I feel in a really privileged position because, of course, there will be some opportunities that arise from this,” Sawkins said on BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland.

“It would be amazing to try and explore them, but at the same time I’m going to keep on going with my degree, so I’m in a nice position.”

When he returned home to Edinburgh, Peter baked a chocolate cake for his flatmates as they all sat down to watch the Bake-Off final together. Despite many winners of the show going on to pursue a career in baking or writing a cookbook, Sawkins said his mind is still focused on his accounting and finance degree at the University of Edinburgh.

A petition has started to rename the campus’ David Hume Tower in honor of the new student star, after its name has proved controversial this year due to links with the city’s slave trading past.
