The World Health Organisation’s part in COVID-19

It’s been over a year since COVID-19 first appeared in China and thus began a challenging time for countries across the world. The World Health Organization’s role has was to give appropriate guidance to slow the pandemic down.

The biggest failure of WHO back then was to not control the information that the world needed. Many countries accused China of hiding the importance of the pandemic and WHO stayed very passive on the subject.

WHO depends mostly on funding from different countries, particularly those with a lot of wealth. With China growing as one of the world’s richest countries it could become one of the most important donators for the organization. As a consequence, the WHO needs to have China on its side at any cost.

The World Health Organisation must take some responsibility for COVID-19, writes Léo Prigent

Considering how the Chinese government acted in the beginning, covering up vital information to protect their reputation, WHO definitely failed in running an independent investigation.

Trump then announced that the United States would be pulling all funding of WHO while accusing it of protecting China.

WHO also failed in protecting developing countries which were the most impacted by the pandemic. According to the Hlobal Humanitarian Overview, 235.4 million people will be in need of help by next year. This has gone from one in 45 people prior to the pandemic to one in 33.

WHO have managed to improve their image lately as the world in general has come to better terms with the coronavirus, its symptoms and effects.

There is still a long way to go though, and more time is definitely needed before a full analysis can be made. The full impact of the coronavirus needs to be understood first, which will probably mean waiting until the pandemic is over completely.
