Lord-LieutenantProfile of Alan Simpson
Alan Simpson OBE, DL, MA(Oxon), DUniv, CEng, MICE

Edinburgh-born, Alan Simpson spent most of his working life as a civil engineer with Fairhurst, based in Glasgow.

He was responsible for the design of a wide range of civil engineering projects including the strengthening of the Forth Road Bridge, the completion of the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow, parts of the M74, wind farms, power station improvements, water treatment works and sewage treatment works.  He retired in 2009.

He was Chairman of the Court of the University of Stirling from 2007 to 2015 and was Chair of the Committee of Scottish Chairs of Higher Education Institutions.  He was member of the Von Prondzynski review panel set up by the Scottish Government to report on Higher Education Governance.  Alan’s other interests include music and he was Chairman of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland from 1998 to 2011.  Alan is a past-chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland, having previously served on the Council of ICE.

Currently, he is chair of the Macrobert Arts Centre and chairman of the Lake of Menteith Fisheries Limited.

Alan was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to education, and in 2017 he was appointed as Lord-Lieutenant.

Mrs Patricia Greenhill, OBE

Appointed as a deputy in 1998, Patricia served as councillor for Dunblane for 23 years and Provost of Stirling District from 1992 to 1996.
She is married with two sons and one granddaughter and has lived in Dunblane since 1971.

Colonel Alastair Campbell

 

Alastair Campbell was born in Aberdeenshire in 1952, and educated mainly in England. After school he joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and served from 1972-1995.

 

On leaving the Army he briefly went unto the hotel trade, but then joined the MOD Civil Service.  He was Regimental Secretary of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Stirling Castle, and Curator of the Museum from 2000 – 2006. He then became the first Regimental Secretary of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, based in Edinburgh Castle, when it formed in 2006, serving until 2017.  He has been involved with the Army Cadet Force, as Commandant of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Battalion from 2003 – 2009 and Director of the Army Cadet Force Pipes and Drums 2009 – 2012.

 

He is a Member of the Royal Company of Archers (Queen’s Bodyguard for Scotland).  He lives in Buchlyvie with his wife, Rosie, and they have three sons.

 


Jacqueline FinglandJacqueline Fingland

 

Jacquie was born in Lenzie and moved to Doune with her family in 1975.  She attained a Bachelor of Accountancy degree from Glasgow University and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

 

Jacquie and her husband moved to the Callander area in 1992 and have five children.

She has enjoyed an active role in the local community, including committee roles in the local Playgroup and then as Chair of the Callander Primary School Board. She assisted in the running of Callander Brownies from 2003 until 2017 and was Coordinator of the McLaren Duke of Edinburgh Group between 2007 and 2016.

 

She is currently Treasurer of the Callander and District Horticultural Society and organises the local ‘Art in the Kirk’ show. Beyond her local community, Jacquie and her family are proud to have supported Cancer Support Scotland (Tak Tent) for over 30 years.

 

 


Gaston Robin James Iffla MBE, DL

 

Robin is a “Son of the Rock”, having been born in Stirling  to Jamaican parents.

His father was a professional cricketer and Robin went on to serve the communities of Central Scotland  by becoming a police officer. Upon retiral form there he went on to become an Equalities advisor to the local Fire and Rescue Service before becoming a founder Board Member of the new Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

A past Dean of The Merchant Guidry of Stirling,  current Chair of the Guardians Of Scotland Trust and a Trustee of Cowane’s Hospital Trust.

Robin is also a director and lead trainer of an Equality and Diversity company and was awarded an MBE for his work on Equalities and Community Cohesion in 2016.

Pippa Maclean

 

Pippa was born and brought up in Stirlingshire. She was educated in Scotland, England and Switzerland. Having worked in London for 10 years in catering, she married and came to live in Scotland, where she started a small catering business.

Pippa now runs a small Holiday Let and bed and breakfast business.

She has one daughter, one son and a stepdaughter.

She has been  involved  on many charity Committees helping  with fundraising events,  including the Forth Carriage Driving for the Disabled (RDA)  and Turn to Us, formally known as The Elisabeth Finn Trust.

Her interests include, the Arts, cooking, gardening, travel and breeding hens.

 


Sir Iain McMillan CBE DL

 

Sir Iain McMillan spent twenty-three years with the TSB Group prior to joining the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in 1993.  He held the position of Director, CBI Scotland for nineteen years until 2014.

Sir Iain now holds a number of Board positions in the business and charitable sectors.  He is currently Chairman of SkillForce, a charity that awards the Prince William Award, and the University of Strathclyde Business School Advisory Board, a Member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal, a Member of Audit & risk Assurance Committee of the Competition Service and Honorary Patron of the Scottish North American Business Council (SNABC).

Sir Iain was appointed CBE for services to the business community and lifelong learning in Scotland (2003); Honorary Air Commodore of 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force (2009); and, in 2015, received a knighthood for services to the Scottish economy.

 

 


Ian Mullen

Ian Mullen OBE, DL, BSc, MRPharmS

Ian Mullen is a pharmacist by profession and has been self-employed virtually since graduating. He established a successful group of community pharmacies in Central Scotland and was elected chairman of the national organisation representing 1,200 Scottish community pharmacists.

He was a non-executive member of many government bodies and chaired two NHS Trusts. As Chair of NHS Forth Valley (2002-12) he led the development and establishment of Forth Valley Royal Hospital in 2011 – then the largest healthcare project created in Scotland. He also chaired the Scottish NHS Chairs Group.

Ian chairs a strategic public affairs company and has taken part in many national and international TV and radio news and current affairs programmes. He has presented at various venues in Australia, and in Europe, as well as at a wide range of UK venues.

Ian has chaired Hub East Central Scotland Ltd since its inception in 2012 and the Hub has now delivered over £600m of public infrastructure – such as schools and healthcare facilities – in Forth Valley, Fife and Tayside. He has also acted as a public sector bid adviser for various national construction companies.

Ian Mullen is a qualified Executive Coach and Mentor, with a specific focus on leadership attributes. He was appointed OBE in 2005 and has been a Deputy Lieutenant since 2002.

 


Colin O’Brien

By profession a teacher, Colin was a High School headteacher for 20 years before being elected to Stirling Council in 1999 representing West Stirlingshire.  He served as a councillor until 2012 and was Provost of Stirling from 2003-7.   During that period, he was a member of the Board of the National Park, latterly its Depute Convener.   For many years he was Chair of the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.    He is a long serving board member of Rural Stirling Housing Association and represents Stirling Presbytery on the Council’s Education Committee.  He has a lifelong connection to the Boys’ Brigade and is an Ambassador for Guiding.

He is married to Elspeth and enjoys time with his children and grandchildren.   Among his interests are music, theatre and travel.

Colin was appointed a Depute Lieutenant in January 2013.


Mary Pitcaithly OBE

 

Mary is a Falkirk Bairn, born and bred.  She returned to Falkirk early in her career as a solicitor and moved to the public sector when she joined Falkirk Council in 1980.  For her last 20 years with the Council she was the Chief Executive, retiring from that role in June 2018.

Mary is now a member of the Board of the Scottish Police Authority and of the newly created Infrastructure Commission.  Reflecting her long term concern for the interests of young people, Mary is also on the Boards of Sacro and YouthLink Scotland.

 

 

 


Marilyn Stenhouse

 

Born and educated in Southampton, Marilyn graduated from London University and moved north to Bridge of Allan with her husband and four children over thirty years ago. They have seven grandchildren.

 

Although recently retired as a JP she remains involved in variety of voluntary positions including, but not limited to: Independent Prison Monitor at Her Majesty’s Prison & Young Offenders Institution Cornton Vale, Stirling; Trustee of Stirling Inter Faith Community Justice Group Board; Children Hearing System; and COSCA (Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland).

 

Her interests include flower arranging, water colour painting, travel and yoga.

Michael White

 

Michael’s earlier career was in Education, as a teacher and headteacher, before moving into management and was the first Director of Education for Aberdeenshire. He is an author of various books on Football.  After retirement, he was Chairman of a housing charity for older people and a volunteer for Alzheimer Scotland, where he developed Football Reminiscence in 2009.

He then managed the nationwide programme for Alzheimer Scotland’s Football Memories Project across Scotland and has helped train volunteers and staff to deliver the sessions. Other reminiscence projects were subsequently developed to cover other sports such as Rugby, Cricket, Golf, Shinty and Speedway. There are now over 200 sport-based reminiscence groups in Scotland.

In 2018, he started a project called Screen Memories, using similar techniques, but using film and TV as the medium for reminiscence and related activities. It became an independent charity in 2018 and delivers sessions in care homes, hospitals, day centres and community settings.

 

Outside of his charity work, he enjoys Football, Rugby, Cinema and Theatre.

Irene Peat

Irene has spent her career in local government and is the PA of the Chief Executive of Falkirk Council.

Prior to that, she worked for Stirling Council.

She took over as Clerk to the Lieutenancy in 2018.
