Awards, Honours, and Messages

The Lord-Lieutenant assess and supports candidates for various awards to local people deserving of recognition for their contributions socially, culturally and civically to the community. They act as a liaison between the area of Lieutenancy and the Royal Family to arrange messages of congratulations for milestone birthdays and special anniversaries.

As the Queen’s representative, the Lord-Lieutenant presents BEMs, Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service, Queen’s Awards for Enterprise and Queen’s Guide and Scout Awards. The Lord-Lieutenant can also present other decorations and awards such as OBEs and MBEs on behalf of the Royal Family when needed, and they officiate at Citizenship Ceremonies. They may also be called upon to attend and participate at events within their Lieutenancy area, for example, openings of community ventures.
