Welcome to the website of the Lieutenancy of Stirling and Falkirk

Appointed by The Queen, on the advice of the First Minister, the Lord-Lieutenant’s role is similar to the Monarch’s. It is non-political and seeks to promote a spirit of co-operation by encouragement of the voluntary services and benevolent organisations, and by taking an active interest in the business, industrial and social life of the area.

As Her Majesty’s personal representative, it is the Lord-Lieutenant’s prime duty to uphold the dignity of the Crown. Other responsibilities include: arranging and escorting Royal visits, assessing nominations for the Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service, presenting awards and honours on behalf of Her Majesty, and officiating at Citizenship ceremonies.
Assisting the Lord-Lieutenant is a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants who are commissioned by each Lord-Lieutenant, subject to confirmation by the Secretary of State that the Queen does ‘not disapprove of the appointment’.  The function of the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a Deputy Lieutenant is to assist in the performance of any public duty performed by the Lord-Lieutenant.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Stirling and Falkirk is Alan Simpson, Esq, OBE, DL, MA(Oxon), DUniv, MICE. He was appointed to this role by Her Majesty, The Queen in 2017 following the retirement of his predecessor, Mrs Marjory McLachlan.
