Haydn Symphony 39 G minor

Quick notes
4 horns including 2 high horns

Allegro Assai: An arresting start: quiet, gentle but bustling with an unexpected pause very early on. The energy persists throughout – the basses are quavers throughout except for just 4 bars of marcato crotchets.

Andante: Begins with a descending figure from dominant to tonic. Once again basses have mainly quavers.

Menuet: high horns get something exciting in the trio – first time you really notice them.

Finale: Hoho – some drama. This gives the sense of players let off their leash.
