Haydn Symphony 47 G major

Allegro: arresting fanfare 1st theme and nice contrasting 2nd theme

Un poco adagio, cantabile: Just plain lovely. Everything as it should be – tension and release. Loads of variations – this puts me in mind of folk music improvisation. Oh and some beautiful darkness towards the end that a bright line shines through.

Menuet & Trio: rhythm to the fore and lots of staccato. This is joyful.

Finale (Presto assai): Another blistering one. Haydn silences to catch us out.
