Over the last two weeks I have contacted my mentor Graeme Matheson (sports development officer at the university) about my placement on the work experience module. My placement involves the main running and hosting of the Campus 5K and Dumyat Hill Race (Two very big university events). I met up with Graeme where he gave me a quick overlook a number of things which are involved with this placement such as such as staff and volunteer recruitment and development, finical planning, promotion of events and logistics. I have now been added to a box folder where we keep the planning and to do list on an excel spread sheet. I have picked a number of tasks to do over the next month which include the emailing and gaining of sponsorships for the events such as big food and nutrition companies, increasing student engagement and recruitment of volunteers. Graeme has been excellent with me in making it clear what he expects and needs from me throughout this placement and made relationships very easy and flowing, this has made me settle into the role very quick and I am now looking forward to getting properly started. Furthermore I think my previous experience of organising events both at school and university has helped me feel more assured however, my new role is of a much bigger size and it is a challenge which I look forward to.
I am looking forward to starting the role properly and feel it will be great for my widening my development. I chose this module as it provides a work based learning approach in the real world which most other modules fail to provide. I feel this will be an enjoyable module and placement and one which will enhance my experience and CV for post university life.
For my next blog I hope to have progressed into emailing and beginning relationships with companies for prizes and sponsorships of the events, along with being a part of the student engagement for both races. This will be done by myself drafting a letter/email of interest to the sponsor and Graeme giving feedback if my proposal to the companies is of good standard for representing the university.
Sounds like a couple of interesting projects to be involved in Andrew, I look forward to seeing how you get on. – Keir
Looks like youve got a good placement, good to see that your aims and objectives have been laid out well for you! Good Luck!
This sounds very fun Andrew. I hope you really enjoy the event side of sport and it is a fun way to do so. Hopefully you can gain valuable experience and maybe one day you can run your very own run!
