Why trumpeting?

Something awkward happens when someone who should have been a trumpet player decides instead to be a professor. These are not easily reconciled styles. So why dwell on it?

Answer 1: It matters.
I am the fifth generation of my family to play the trumpet. My grandfather left school at 11 to work in the local pit in Ayrshire. His trumpet gave him the opportunity to escape from there. I am the beneficiary of that long-gone social mobility.

Answer 2: It explains.
It develops a certain character, playing the trumpet. Strong self-belief. A willingness to dominate, briefly but nonetheless stealing the show. Ability to work with others but never as part of the crowd. Never easy to get along with.

Answer 3: It creates.
The sound is created entirely by what the player does. Every note is an expressive gesture: a projection of what is being imagined.

Answer 4: It fulfills.
Music is deeply mysterious and doing it is so fulfilling. My professional life has felt fulfilling whenever it felt like I was making music.
