Saudia Arabia – Changes to Women’s Rights in 2019

My final blog post will feature the changes that have been made within Saudi Arabia in terms of women’s rights.

  1. Women over the age of 21 are now permitted to apply for a passport and travel without having her MG’s approval.
  2. Women over 18 are now allowed to register the birth of a child, the death of a family member and even apply for divorce without prior permission.
  3. Women can now act as the head of the household, along with males.

Even though these changes are radical for Saudi Arabia and have created a more equal society, there is still a long way to go. With the Male Guardianship System still in place it is difficult for drastic changes to be made. This is clear with the following still an major issue in Saudi Arabia…

  • Women are still not permitted to marry without permission, or marry off a child without permission
  • They are still majorly unprotected in terms of domestic and sexual violence

In conclusion, it is evident that women rights are valued in certain places across the world. Through the different types of feminism it is also clear there are a variety of different opinions on women’s rights and their places within the 21st Century. Through the aid of the Saudi Arabian Case Study, it is however still clear that women’s rights are still not equal to mens in Saudi Arabia and there is a long way to go for this to be the case.
