Welcome

Welcome to the Blog for HISU9X6

Please use this blog to post your responses to lecture and readings, your plans for your dissertations and any useful information that you would like to share with your supervisors and peers. I will read these and invite comments or comment myself if appropriate. It is a good way to try out ideas and get responses before having formal feedback from tutors/

First of all, please introduce yourself: Tell us where you are from, what sort of history or heritage dissertation you are currently thinking of doing and how you’ve been coping with distance learning?

  1. Hi, my name is Tara and I am from a small village called Coldingham in the Scottish borders. For my dissertation topic I have been looking into doing something relating to literature and its place in heritage. I would really like to focus on a specific era such as the 18th century where I could further explore the links between literature and our heritage. Personally online learning has had its ups and downs, seminars I find engaging however, I have found it can be more difficult to focus being in my flat.

  2. Hello, I am Ross and I am from Edinburgh. I am thinking of looking at Scottish medieval history (around c.13th or c.14th) for my dissertation topic. Like most, I’ve found online learning to have its benefits and shortcomings.

  3. Hi, I’m Jessie, studying Heritage and Tourism. I currently live just outside of Stirling but am from a very rural village on the west coast of Scotland. I am interested in Scotland’s maritime history, particularly around Nordic and Celtic cultures, but I am still trying to narrow down a specific area of research for my dissertation project. I have found the slightly more flexible approach to online learning useful in terms of work/family/study balance but miss the face to face interactions with lecturers and fellow students. The limited access to the library has also made studying particularly difficult for me.

  4. Hi everyone,
my name is Sophie, and I am from a small village near Berlin, Germany. I am still undecided on what topic I want to write my dissertation about, but I am interested in heritage and how history is portrayed in museums. I think online learning has been an interesting experience, but I prefer face-to-face teaching as I think engaging in seminars is easier and I feel like I can concentrate better at uni.

  5. Hi everyone!

My name is Hannah and I am from Edinburgh. I am still mostly undecided on my dissertation topic however a period of history that I am particularly interested in is the Scottish Wars of Independence and so this is an area I might look into further as a start point for a topic.

I’ve found that online learning has its pros and cons. Living in Edinburgh it has been much more convenient to attend classes online rather than commuting. However, I miss being able to access the university facilities easily especially the library and also being able to participate face to face with staff and students.

  6. Hi, I’m Erin and I am from Glasgow. I am not sure what the topic of my dissertation will be yet, but I’m interested in Irish history and am thinking on focusing my dissertation on this or race. I enjoyed parts of online learning but it has been challenging in many ways too.

  7. Hi, I’m Leah and I’m from Cumbernauld a town just outside of Glasgow. I am in between two ideas for my dissertation topic, the first being public perceptions of the Nazi party during WW2 and the second being to look at the European handlings of the Spanish Flu in 1918-1920. I have enjoyed parts of online learning but finding the motivation to complete tasks and concentrate can be challenging

  8. Dear Patrick

This is exactly right – I’ve just not published your comment – write me an introductory post and I will do so

    Best wishes

    Ian

  9. Hi everyone,

I’m Alastair and I’m from the Isle of Arran, off the west coast of Scotland. I’m still not entirely sure about a dissertation topic however I was thinking of something along the lines of Radicalism in Britain during the 19th century. There are some aspects of online learning that I do like but obviously I would prefer to learn on campus.
