Introduction – David Freeman

Hello I am David Freeman, I am from Edinburgh but live in Stirling. I have been considering writing a project about the rise of populist politics before the Russian revolution but I need to decide over the next week if it would be practical to study this as a topic. I have been finding online learning difficult though after doing the modules last semester I feel more confident about this module.

Introduction- Rachel B

Hi everyone! I’m Rachel and I’m from a little town near Stirling called Denny. I’m currently in 3rd year studying a single honours history degree. In terms of what topic I would like to do my dissertation on, I’m thinking something gender issues related as I thoroughly enjoyed my gender module last semester. Distance learning has been super hard with trying to focus in the house but I’m starting to settle into it. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the seminar!

Alice Pearson – Introduction

Hi everyone,

My name is Alice and I’m from Edinburgh. I’m currently living in Bridge of Allan. I’m thinking of writing my dissertation on an aspect of gender history in Britain in the nineteenth-century. I’m not really sure on a specfic topic yet but I am hoping to narrow my options down during the course of this module. I’m more comfortable with online learning now and have found getting into a routine useful to stay on top of work. I’m looking forward to working with you all!

Aidan Mooney Introduction

Hi everyone, I’m Aidan and I live in Edinburgh. I am not sure what topic I’d like to do for my dissertation, I am leaning towards something to do with the growth of nationalism in Europe in the 19th/early 20th century. Looks like some folk have a clearer idea than others but hopefully this module will help me make up my mind.

As for online learning, pre-pandemic I was commuting to Stirling from Edinburgh so working from home suited me quite well. The novelty has definitely worn off though and I’d prefer to be back on campus. Looking forward to getting started next week!

Sam Bearhope – Introduction

Hi everyone, I’m Sam and I’m from Berwick – Upon – Tweed about 30 seconds from the Scottish border, and about an hour from Newcastle and Edinburgh either way. The thought of writing a dissertation gives me some anxiety but I’m thinking of writing it on some aspect of Nazi Germany or possibly early Soviet Cinema. Some parts of online I’ve found enjoyable but for the most part its been a struggle that I’m yet to get used to.

Introduction- Chloe

Hi my name is Chloe Nash and I am from Falkirk which is near Stirling. I am currently thinking of writing my dissertation on an aspect African history, however, I am finding it hard to decide on this. I found online learning hard at first but I feel more comfortable with it this semester as I am learning how to work my way around it all.

Introduction- Caitlin

Hello, my name is Caitlin and I am from Stirling so have just commuted to university since I started. For my dissertation topic I am not entirely sure on what I am looking to do, but would have an interest in the topic of race and maybe looking at the civil rights movement back in the 1950’s and 60’s in America. As for studying at home and not being able to go into the uni has been a big change but I am slowly getting use to this new normality.

Introductions

Hi everyone,

My name is Aylie and I am from Biggar in South Lanarkshire. I am part of the integrated Heritage and Tourism course and I am really looking forward to preparing for writing a Dissertation next year. I fell in love with history and people’s stories after volunteering at my local museum and being inspired by my brilliant History teacher in high school. I have a couple of ideas for what I might write about, but nothing set in stone yet. I grew up in Thailand and only moved to Scotland when I was 13, so I have specific interest in cross-cultural heritage, and understanding the lines between appropriation and appreciation for other people’s histories.

Distance learning has been challenging, however I am very lucky to live with two really great friends and we’ve been able to support each other through this year. I’m looking forward to getting started with this module and meeting you all soon.

Introduction – Cerys

Hi, my name is Cerys, I am from a small village called Westend, which is in South Lanarkshire. I am currently thinking about my dissertation to focus on America. American history I am thinking of focusing on Black Females and the contribution to national progress (women in the space race, technology and stuff like that). Also in American history, I am thinking about the great depression and the rise of Anti-Heros like Al Capone and Bonnie and Clyde and the perception of them. Online learning I don’t mind doing, I can focus at home and don’t get too distracted, I definitely don’t miss the commute up to Stirling, but also at home I have 4 dogs that seem to need my attention more than they usually do just because I am at home.

Introduction

Hi, I’m Leah and I’m from Cumbernauld a town just outside of Glasgow. I am in between two ideas for my dissertation topic, the first being public perceptions of the Nazi party during WW2 and the second being to look at the European handlings of the Spanish Flu in 1918-1920. I have looked at the rise of the Nazi party in Advanced Higher but would like to broaden my knowledge on the subject after having visited Auschwitz. The topic of the Spanish Flu is something that caught my interest after the Covid-19 pandemic and would love to know more about what happened during the 1918 epidemic. I have enjoyed parts of online learning but finding the motivation to complete tasks and concentrate can be challenging.
