Never Too Old for Disney

Flying on a magical carpet with Aladdin, going on an adventure with the Little Mermaid, or finding Nemo sounds so much more appealing than reading academic texts in the library. University life can be quite stressful. Being social sometimes comes way too short between going to lectures and preparing for classes. In particular, when you are new to University and don’t know a lot of people, it can be hard getting yourself out of your shell, cast off your fins, and make new friends. Especially if you don’t want to go to great lengths and sell your voice for it. Luckily, there is an easy way to meet new people with the same interests as you: join a society!

If you are looking for a society offering diverse activities with just the little bit of extra Disney themed magic, the Disney Appreciation Society might be the right society for you. The SUDAS (Stirling University Disney Appreciation Society) is one of the newer societies. It was founded in 2015 and is currently run by society president Kate. She joined the society a year ago and took over as the president this year.

“The Disney Appreciation Society is a good place to get out and away from your ‘study bubble’,” says Kate. It is especially important for the society to create a carefree space for people to socialize and have fun at their various events. Even if you aren’t the most talented singer or most creative person, you don’t need to be embarrassed about joining them for karaoke or craft nights.

The diversity of events, the society has planned for this semester guarantees that there will be fun activities for everyone. Besides socials like pub crawls and dinners, the SUDAS has planned many other events. The society’s president is particularly proud of their collaborations with other societies. This includes movie nights with the film society, where you can talk about your favourite Disney movie or themed crafting nights. For Halloween, the society has planned a pumpkin carving event together with the Mental Wellbeing Society.

There is one event in particular that stuck in the president’s head: the “I’ll make a man out of you” walk from Airthrey Castle to Stirling Castle. Last year’s sponsored walk was not only a good opportunity to raise money for the society but also a good bonding time for all members. Another past event that has been hugely successful and will be held again this semester is the Murder Mystery night. The Disney themed Murder Mystery is organised by the True Crime Society.

This year’s highlight will be a trip to Glasgow to watch Aladdin the Musical at the end of November.
