Basketball is for everyone

I love Basketball. I just always found it more entertaining to play and watch than any other sport. It’s fast, it changes quickly and it needs the right amount of finesse to score. So upon arriving in Stirling, naturally, I had to check out the Men’s Basketball Team. (Not a guy? There’s a Woman’s team as well of course) and see what they are doing.

Training Times:

  • Tuesday 7am-9am (First Team)
  • Tuesday 8pm-10pm (Second Team)
  • Wednesday 6pm-8pm (Fixtures/Open Session)
  • Thursday 8am-10am (Second Team)
  • Friday 7am-9am (First Team)
  • Friday 8:30pm-10pm (Social Session)

It couldn’t be more easy to join, they do an open session every Friday from 20:30 – 22:00, everyone is welcome to join, meet the people and see what the levels are like. Then if you’re interested in joining, you sign up for £55 for the whole year and you get the chance to train twice a week with the team you get selected for (depending on your level)  and play matches against other university teams almost every Wednesday.

Now besides making friends and doing a sport together, every team sport has, of course, the advantage that a good team, is a good team! Sounds like a lame phrase? Well, a good team hangs out far more than in the training. It gives you a group of people you share (at least one) interest with and gives you friends to hang out with when you are new in a place. No matter if Fresher, Master Student or just looking for some new people to hang out with it’s always nice to have a few people to go out with.

One thing I really enjoy about the society is the lived openness to everyone. Seldom have I encountered a sports club so international, so open and friendly towards everyone. It is not only a slogan, everyone can come and play, no matter your background or level. They regularly organize tournaments together with the Woman’s team and with Universities from all over the UK.

Basketball is a sport for everyone. That shouldn’t just be a slogan, it is lived a Stirling. Don’t believe it? They are proofing it to you! Every year they organize the University of Stirling Open Basketball Tournament. All societies or just groups of friends are welcome to register a team to participate in a day-long event on Sunday 4th of November.

Go register your team now! They’re looking forward to welcome everyone, no matter where from! It will be played as a 2x 10-minute tournament with 5 players per team. It will start with a group stage, later entering in a classic K.O. System. To keep it fair, our first and second team will not participate as one team, but split up and built teams with friends and classmates with no more than 2 players from our team in each individual team! So don’t get discouraged, it will be a day full of fun and some interesting games!

For more information and to register your team just visit our Facebook Page and while you’re at it, make sure to check us out on Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat (uosmensbball)! We hope to see you all there!
