“This is our world, a common world. Everybody should feel a common responsibility”
-Ban Ki Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations
What is Model United Nations?
Model United Nations (MUN) allows students to be propelled into an exciting simulated UN conference setting. It promotes debate, negotiation and ultimately helps explore and discover solutions to global issues that are currently being tackled by the world community and the real United Nations system in particular. MUN expands classroom education throughout various disciplines by blending learned textbook knowledge with real-world problem-solving. We travel to national, as well as international conferences, together as a delegation, and compete in them. Beforehand, we practice together and work on essential skill-sets, that will improve your performance in any future job you may have!
The Model United Nations society or program in general, is not only for political science students; it is a truly interdisciplinary society, evoking the political reality while utilizing various skills associated with geography, sociology, anthropology, psychology, law, economics, political science, urban planning, and a broad array of other professional and academic disciplines.
Are you a politically interested and ambitious person? Do you enjoy discussing ideas and cooperating with other people in order to solve an issue? Then we are exactly what you have been looking for!
The MUN society promotes the creation of an engaged, ethical and aware global citizenry and you can be a part of that!
Why should I participate in MUN?
Aside from the fact that you become part of a fun and interesting community and build strong friendships, MUN gives you training in various fields, that will come in very handy in your future!
- it promotes interest in international relations and related subjects
- increases the capacity for students to engage in problem-solving
- creates the opportunity to meet new and like-minded people
- teaches aspects of public speaking, conflict resolution, communication and research skills
We practice together and meet up as a group for socials as well, but it all comes down to the conferences we participate in as a delegation for Stirling University. There are three conferences coming up this semester, that have been amazing experiences the past few years:
- Oximun in Oxford – 20th-23rd of October
- CamMUN in Cambride – 2nd -4th of November
- SheffMUN in Sheffield – 23rd – 26th of November
No prior MUN experience is required! The experienced SUMUN committee will provide you with the necessary guidance through the whole process.
